NHTSA National Crackdown - Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over

Posted by Francis M. Smith on Fri, Jan 13, 2017

By Francis M. Smith

The winter holidays are a time for celebration, hope, and renewal in defiance of the cold and long nights. During this season, many people travel long distances for a special dinner with relatives or a party with friends. Unfortunately, this merry-making has a significantly less jolly side effect: the periods surrounding the Christmas and New Year’s holidays see dramatic spikes in drunk driving fatalities compared to the yearly average. The combination of treacherous winter driving conditions and holiday drinking create a deadly mix for people traveling on the nation’s roads in late December. In 2015, the period surrounding Christmas and New Year’s (just over a week) saw 259 deaths in drunk driving related automotive crashes.

The holidays are a wonderful opportunity to spend time with family and friends, relax in a festive atmosphere, and celebrate the season. Unfortunately, the winter holidays also coincide with the onset of some of the most unpredictable and dangerous weather conditions of the year for driving. With the high volume of vehicles on the road during the holiday season, driving in suboptimal weather conditions becomes particularly hazardous. Though you can't control the behavior of other motorists or the weather, there are a few important precautions you can take to help you and your family reduce your risk of getting into a car accident during your holiday drive.

NJ Personal Injury Attorney Praises Mothers

Posted by Francis M. Smith on Wed, May 06, 2015

By Francis M. Smith

Many of you know I grew up in a family of nine children. What was it like for my Mom? Can you imagine feeding, clothing and keeping up with a household when 11 people live in it? Wow. That doesn’t count the time when Mom was caring for Uncle Eddie, terminally ill, and living with us.

Posted by Francis M. Smith on Mon, Sep 01, 2014

By Francis M. Smith

The end of summer is upon us. The nights are getting cooler, the days shorter. Kids are getting ready to go back to school. In our family, my son Wyatt is headed to law school. My wife is getting ready to open her pre-school (The Gingham Giraffe in Chatham Township - for the 24th year!). Some folks are still taking vacations, and of course Labor Day means family gatherings to mark the change of seasons.

NJ Personal Injury Attorney Francis M. Smith Embraces Summer

Posted by Francis M. Smith on Wed, Jun 18, 2014

By Francis M. Smith

People have been commenting on it for weeks. It's finally here. We have suffered through the most brutally cold and snowy winter in recent memory. Spring has arrived with Memorial day and summer officially begins on June 21. It seems we have been waiting so long and thought it would never arrive. Sure, it came with some headaches: a little flooding, many potholes are still evident (drive safely!), a car full of mulch and a brand new Honeydew List ("Honey, do this. Honey, do that."). But the warm weather is finally here, and I could not be happier. Not only is the weather warming up, but special events seem to be coming my way en masse this year.

Drunk Driving Car Accident Warnings for St. Patrick's Day

Posted by Francis M. Smith on Fri, Mar 07, 2014

By Francis M. Smith

St. Patrick’s Day is coming which means wearing green, people talking in bad Irish brogue, corned beef and cabbage and lots of ads with leprechauns in them. Unfortunately, it also means many people will be drinking and then getting behind the wheel. A St. Patrick’s Day celebration that ends in DUI or tragedy in a car accident can be avoided by knowing the facts and taking precautions.

NJ Personal Injury Attorney Remembers Our Country’s Heroes

Posted by Francis M. Smith on Fri, Feb 14, 2014

Has anybody here seen my old friend Abraham? Can you tell me where he’s gone?
He freed a lot of people but it seems the good die young — I just looked around and he’s gone.

These lines are from a great song by Dion that came out in 1968, when I was a junior at New Providence High School. (Wow – time flies!) The song also spoke of other great Americans who were assassinated – John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Bobby Kennedy – all of whom, like Lincoln, fought for social justice and a better place to live.

We who spent our formative years in the 1960’s were traumatized by the last three assassi- nations, and Dion’s song made us realize that history unfortunately repeats itself. I can’t think of Lincoln now without thinking of Dion’s song and the others who were martyred for their beliefs and leadership.

You already know that all of them were great orators. Not just speakers, but orators in the classic sense, who caught our imagination and helped us see that things could be – and should be – better. I recommend listening to or watching video of their speeches. They ring true and are just as relevant now as when they were given.

In the most quoted speech in the world, Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, the president said that our country was “conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”

Ironically, Lincoln thought that “The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here” but he wanted us to remember to make the deaths of those Civil War soldiers mean something, by striving to make this the country what it was meant to be, in his famous words, “of the people, by the people, and for the people.”

Who Was The First American?

Posted by Francis M. Smith on Thu, Jan 16, 2014

Inventor. Philosopher. Politician. Diplomat. Scientist.  He may not have been President of the United States, but Benjamin Franklin shaped our nation from its infancy arguably more than any other man of his generation. Franklin was fundamental in defining the American ethos (he advised Jefferson while writing the Declaration of Independence, and was one of the signers of that great document) and his personal values serve as a mirror to what defines our nation at its very core. He cherished independence, hard work, education and practicality (remember all his aphorisms he published in Poor Richard’s Almanac) while opposing authoritative government and class structure.

Holiday Traditions of NJ Personal Injury Attorney Frank Smith

Posted by Francis M. Smith on Wed, Dec 18, 2013

By Francis M. Smith

You know the holiday season has arrived when all the Black Friday advertising starts. You will not find me or my family in the stores that day. We spend Thanksgiving weekend up in the woods in a cabin in beautiful Lackawaxen Town- ship in Northeastern Pennsylvania. When I was growing up in a family of nine children, it was tradition that we’d all gather for dinner at my parents’ house — no matter how many spous- es, significant others, and children that meant feeding. I think there was one year when thirty-five people appeared for dinner!
