NJ Restricts the Use of Car Interrupt Devices

Generally, we expect that new developments in automotive technology will make our cars safer, more environmentally friendly, or more convenient. We do not expect new technologies to allow banks and dealerships to disable our vehicles if we miss a car payment. However, that is exactly the situation created by the euphemistically-termed "payment assurance devices" that many lenders are installing on the vehicles they sell to sub-prime loan customers. People who are trying to rebuild their credit and improve their financial situation -- which may require them to have transportation to get to work -- may find their cars remotely disabled if they run into a bit of financial trouble.
